Why does terminology matter? Reliable, accurate, and high quality terminology is critical in achieving a consistent brand and evoking a particular response in your customers. Terminology management can improve the quality of your publications and customer experience, leading to increased customer satisfaction.
As the title suggests, terminology is here to stay with terms becoming increasingly adopted by organizations to describe a company, product, service or even a unique selling point. Think of Sony and Cyber Shot cameras, BMW and M Motorsport or the Nokia brand tagline, 'Connecting People'.
However, creating terms and storing them in a useable manner is only the first step. The real value comes from managing your terminology. Although this process can be demanding, terms need to be up-to-date in order to support organizations both internally and externally. The correct use of a term in the right situation is therefore paramount in clearly communicating with your audience.

As a solution to terminology management, a majority of terminology projects rely on spreadsheets and word lists to manage terminology. One issue with flat files is that terms cannot be validated as there is no inbuilt tracking, administrative security, workflow or user rights.
Many translators remain unaware of the need to invest in terminology development and active management. Consider what happens if you don’t manage your terminology?
